A Little Bit Goes A Long Way

Owls are often considered the symbol of wisdom. One of the reasons I admire the owl from the Tootsie Pop commercials, in particular, is because it reveals a quest. When asked a question, rather than granting an answer, he instead shifts the work to the asker. Let’s find out. That’s the stance one should take on a quest for knowledge we aren’t yet in possession of.

I was in a recent workshop with my coworkers and the primary focus of our discussion had to do with future thinking. In order to plan for the future, you have to be willing to seek solutions for things that may not be problems yet. In this sense, we are all capable of being that wise owl, who may not have all the answers, but isn't afraid to seek them.

With this concept, we become the wise owls chillin' on a tree branch...

As believers, that makes our journey into the future quite simplistic. We aren’t consulting eight balls, fortune tellers, or old owls. Instead, we are able to go straight to the source when we are in need of clarity or direction. With this concept, we become the wise owls chillin' on a tree branch because we know how to tap into the source of all wisdom. In all his omniscience, God knows when we find ourselves hitting a brick wall and are in need of guidance. Not just any old kind of guidance, but the kind that only he can provide.  That's wise, my friends.

In many ways, that is our first glimpse into wisdom. Remember how I mentioned that Tootsie Pop owl? Wisdom isn’t always about knowing all the answers. Someone once broke it down for me like this. Knowledge is gathering information. Wisdom is knowing how to apply the knowledge you gathered. So that old wise owl from the commercial understood that the answer to the question wasn’t as simple as a number. Or perhaps it was just a matter of helping the little boy understand that wisdom comes first by seeking knowledge.

When I’m looking at living a life of faith, I can’t be content with what other people tell me about God. I have to reach a point where it becomes my turn to pursue him for me. AND, it is a genuine and sincere desire to seek him for all things. That includes when I’m in need of understanding, when I’m hurting, when I’m feeling lonely, or even when I’m in the most joyful state I could ever be in.

Wisdom is involves knowing where to put your trust. And if you have questions, isn’t it wise to go to the one that you know has the answers? Afterall, would you take your car to an accountant or someone who’s area of expertise is all things motor vehicles?

Stay Sunny!
