Find What You Seek

The past few weeks, I’ve had conversations with several different people and each conversation produced one word. Seek

Have you ever desired something so much that you see it everywhere? Hear reminders in conversations that are unrelated? You may sometimes see this portrayed humorously in movies or TV shows. In a lot of old classic cartoons, they’d show someone stranded on an island and every object they look at appears to be food. Or when they depict a mirage, it’s the same thing. The thing they so desperately want or need seems to appear right before them.

Although that’s fiction, it’s what I think about when I think of earnestly seeking God. Reminders are everywhere. We need to keep our eyes and ears open for Him. A few years ago, I remember watching an episode of Spongebob Squarepants called “Big Pink Loser”. Spongebob, if you’re unfamiliar with him, is quite the go getter and has been winning all these awards. Patrick, his best friend, not so much. Without turning this into a review of the episode, I’ll skip to the point. Spongebob tells Patrick, “If you want to win an award, you have to do something.”

That stuck with me to this day. When I heard it, my focus immediately shifted to my faith walk. I don’t believe that we should be stuck at mustard seed faith for our entire life. The expectation from a seed is growth. But if I do nothing with it, then yes, it will always be a seed. So yes, hearing Spongebob’s words reminded me of the necessity of putting my faith to work. Doing something.

What does that have to do with seeking? It’s simple. It means that no matter where you are or what you are doing you are attentively listening to and for the voice of God. You want to hear from Him. You want to see Him in the things around you. Your appetite is shifting and it’s the things of God that you now hunger and thirst after. As we earnestly seek after Him, we’ll find that He was never far from us.

Stay Sunny!
