I Have No Reason to Fear

My coworkers love to brainstorm. I admit, I enjoy it too. To an extent. I’m a thinker and I often have to make myself stop overthinking and make a decision. If you’ve ever been there, then you know that it’s easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis. Time slips away and suddenly your decision is made for you! I encountered this many times, but most memorable is several months ago while on a trip with friends. We had so many possible options for dinner and time kept ticking away as we contemplated what to eat and where to eat it from. Suddenly, it was so late that our available options became limited. There have been other instances among my peers where we find ourselves venturing down the rabbit hole and never turning back. So deeply immersed in the weeds that we lose sight of the original purpose of the discussion.
I recently attended a seminar hosted by a peer who spoke about change. Most importantly, she was addressing the fear that is often associated with it. We know that change is a constant. It is inevitable. Yet, as the pendulum begins to swing, there are people that are so resistant to the shift that they put in extra effort to put a stop to it. This got me thinking deeply about myself. I was thinking about moments I’ve allowed myself to be crippled by fear. In the majority of the instances when that has happened, the fear or the worry wasn’t related to known information.
The fear of the unknown is something that haunts many people. It’s a part of our natural curiosity to know what we don’t know. Unfortunately for some of us, what we don’t know ends up crippling our path forward because we can’t overcome all the unknown variables. As a believer in Jesus Christ, I find that this is where our faith can truly reveal itself. You can find many promises in scripture of an assurance that we are not alone. No matter the path we choose, God is right there with us.
When my journey begins to feel fearful and the unknowns begin to monopolize my focus, I have found reassurance in remembering God’s promise to never leave me alone. Not only is with me, but he understands me and my circumstances better than I ever will. I’ve found that this is why knowing God’s word and his promises proves so vital. We can overcome fear by reminding ourselves that, through Christ, we are already victors. Our inheritance is not one of being controlled by fear. Instead, we have to move steadily forward with an affirming faith, a belief that all things are possible through Christ.
