Move 'dem Mountains

One day I was driving down the road and thinking about an inspirational song I often listen to. In it, they simply talk about God being a mountain mover. As I drove and meditated on those words, I started thinking about mountains. What makes a mountain move? Can a mountain actually move? Can it grow or shrink? Can it collapse? How does that happen? My mind immediately began sifting through natural justifications. Earthquakes, volcanoes, and other natural disasters. Looking back, I can’t help but be mystified by how easy it was for me to think of a list of plausible explanations for a mountain to shift. Is this the same thing we do with those spiritual mountains? You bet.

You mean that mountain can move just by me speaking to it?

Our mind is always busy. With the thousands of thoughts we have each day, attempting to apply logical reasoning to things that would otherwise seem illogical is a norm. Since our faith is often based on what we do not see with our natural eye, it definitely seems illogical when we try to justify it based on what we see. Yet there are many examples in the bible that encourage us to do just that. Look at young David. Five stones and a sling is what he was armed with when preparing to face his giant. His mountain. For some of us, there is no way you can convince us to do the same because, logically, it seems insane.

Yet, that is the faith goal we should aspire to have. No matter how big our Goliath or how immovable the mountain before us appears, we know that our faith and our God are far bigger. That is the motivator for being able to speak to the mountains in our life with an assurance that they will move. I don’t have to whip out any climbing gear to conquer Everest. I don’t have to monitor a seismograph in order to gauge when an earthquake might come that will bring it toppling down. I just have to have a faith that is greater than the obstacles that stand before me. A confident faith that allows me to know beyond any doubts that, no matter what the situation before me looks like, God was, is, and will always be in control of it all.
