Where’s My Rainbow?

I love rain. I like listening to those drops fall. It’s soothing at times. Sometimes, we’re treated to a lovely rainbow after the rain. Each time I see one, I’m reminded of all of God’s promises. Lately, I’ve been thinking about that rainbow for a variety of reasons. One reason is because life often brings with it for us many storms. I’ve witnessed rainbows after a small storm. I’ve witnessed them after a great one. All those varieties make me aware that no matter the size of the storm raging in life, God’s promise never fails.
As I noted last week, it’s spring time. It’s an excellent time to begin to take in newness. One of the many reasons I enjoy welcoming spring is because it comes just as we emerge from a brutal winter. Freezing temperatures, ice, snow, and darker days can dull the brightest of moods. As I thought about all those things, I began wondering why our storms in life have a tendency to monopolize our attention. Even after it stops raining! You know how it’s said that bad news travels faster than good, right? It’s the same principle. If only we could think about the good that comes after.
In life, turmoil has a tendency to feel like it is set to infinite. That’s why, even when a trial or issue is overcome, we spend so much time dwelling on it. We forget to look for the rainbow! That trial monopolized so much of our focus that, even when it comes to an end, we aren’t mentally prepared to move on. Looking at the trials we face in life as a season is merely one stepping stone. As we grow, spiritually speaking, we learn the value of truly releasing those worry weights that we’ve been yoking ourselves with. It’s never an even match. Yet, in letting go, we create so much more room in our lives to embrace peace.
I recently dealt with a brief illness and my doctor reminded me of the toll that stress can take on our bodies. That’s what happens when we are holding on to issues and worries that we really need to release. It’s hard to let some of those worries go when we know we need a solution right away. That’s where our faith and trust in God comes into play the most. When the path we are on seems the murkiest, that’s when we need to rely on God more than we do ourselves. Trust that he hears your cry and already has a solution. We just need to work on nurturing our faith. Each hardship is an opportunity for us to trust God in bigger and greater ways than we did the day before.
