Preparing for Overflow

Have you ever felt good? Like brimming with so much happiness or anticipation that you can’t really explain it? Really, that is joy. It at times defies explanation. People that may be closely acquainted with your situation believe you have nothing to smile about and yet, you are still joyful and full of hope. Those are the moments that make me reflect on the love of God. When my mind wants to become overwhelmed with all the woes and all the worries, I’m reminded about the goodness of God. Furthermore, I’m reminded that even if no one else cares for me, he does. Each day that I rise, I’m able to witness that love.

Some of this joy is a result of having a cup that is not just full to the brim, but overflowing. If my cup is overflowing, then I don’t just have what I need. I have excess. Overflow. But sometimes, we don’t always acknowledge it the way we should. I use a humidifier to combat the occasionally dry air in my bedroom. Like most of those sort of devices, it has a “Max” fill indicator. That little bar lets you know when you have just enough water inside the tank. One day when I was refilling, I made the tactile error of misjudging my wiggle room. Well, that and not giving the task my full attention. That combo resulted in an unexpected overflow of water.

Obviously, that’s not quite the same as an overflow of blessings. But the experience did make my mind wander there in order to consider my posture when it comes to overflow. If I have faith and that is the life I’ve chosen to live, if I trust God completely to supply every need that I have, then my arms should always be uplifted and wide open ready to receive what he pours out for me. As believers, we should all be striving toward building a posture that is ready to receive every good thing that God has prepared for us. Whether we are finding ourselves in a period of waiting or even if we are actively receiving, we should do so with the full knowledge that there is absolutely nothing that God can’t accomplish on our behalf. That’s not just worth waiting for. It’s worth praising him.
