Shining Bright

I loved watching horror movies growing up. Now, I’m more of a cozy mystery fan. But whatever the genre, one thing is pretty universal. Scary things happen in the dark. To escape, light is needed. But that often leads to being exposed to whatever the threat may be. Your choice is to either cower in the darkness or to brave the exposure and stand in the light. They are just movies, but they often lead to great conversations with our friends and families about what our choice would be and why the actor or actress made the wrong one.

These scenes often remind me of a spiritual truth. Light and dark are not compatible. You can’t be filled with love, if you are filled with hatred. You can only fully commit to one or the other. I feel that we can see the why in something many of us have probably experienced one way or another. Laundry.
I love doing laundry. It can be considered my pastime. Over the years, I have had more than one occasion where a dark item has bled into my lighter clothing because I mistakenly washed them together. Once my lighter clothing is stained, it’s as good as ruined. There is no saving it. Not without attempting every possible internet hack I can find and probably making it worse!
The point for me is always that the stain of darkness, which spiritually speaking is habitual sinful living, can’t be hidden or mixed in among the light. It will always be exposed. It becomes increasingly important to ensure we aren’t mixing and darks with our lights.
How? This is obviously something I can’t do independently. And I shouldn’t want to. My laundry detergent and all my hacks may not prevent my clothes from being stained by a random blue sock I didn’t see, but the cleansing of my soul can in fact become spotless. Only by the blood of Jesus.
Stay Sunny!
